What most Bury St Edmunds driveways are, and how they age
The town's driveways date themselves. Moreton Hall and the other estates built out from the 1970s onwards came with concrete or tarmac drives, many now crazed, patched around service trenches or stained beyond cleaning. The block paving boom of the 1990s and 2000s left herringbone drives that grow weeds in every sand joint and ruck where cars turn. Around the older streets off Risbygate and out towards Westley, you find gravel and part-made surfaces that were never really built as driveways at all.
On the clay-influenced ground east and south of town the ageing is faster, because chalky boulder clay moves with the seasons: dry-summer shrinkage opens cracks, wet-winter swelling lifts slabs and edges. A renovation that ignores why the old surface failed will fail the same way.
Overlay or rebuild: the honest fork in the road
Resin bound surfacing can be laid directly over existing concrete or tarmac when the base is sound, and that is the genuinely economical renovation: no excavation, less mess, a day or two of work, and the old slab becomes the foundation for a new surface. Sound means firmly bedded, free of active cracks and reasonably level. Minor static cracks can be treated before overlay; active movement cannot be papered over, because a crack that moves will eventually print through any surface laid on top.
Two caveats belong in any straight conversation about overlays. First, levels: adding 15 to 18 millimetres plus any levelling course raises the finished surface, and thresholds, damp courses and garage doors have to still work. Second, drainage: an overlay on impermeable concrete is only as permeable as what is underneath, so runoff needs a plan, whether that is falls to a border, a drainage channel or, where the rules require it, a permeable rebuild instead. Block paving is usually a different story. It is rarely a suitable overlay base as laid, so the typical renovation lifts it, re-grades and compacts the sub-base, and lays resin bound on a new binder course. More work than an overlay, but the result is a driveway rebuilt from the ground up rather than a cosmetic top coat.
A fair test of any renovation quote
It should say which of the three routes you are buying: overlay on the existing base, partial rebuild, or full excavation and new sub-base. If the quote does not name the route and the reason, you cannot compare it with anything.

Bury St Edmunds is a market town where property is judged from the street, whether that is a Victorian terrace near the station or a detached house on Lark Grange. A cracked drive drags a frontage down faster than almost anything else a house shows the street.
